Family Tree
The Old Malvernian Lodge is one of three Lodges sponsored by the Grand Stewards’ Lodge.
The Grand Stewards’ Lodge is without number, and heads the list of Lodges under the United Grand Lodge of England.
Our sister lodges are the Cornhill Lodge No 1803 and the Metropolitan Grand Stewards Lodge No 9812.
Our daughter lodge is the Old Wellingburian Lodge no 5570, a lodge for old boys of Wellingborough School in Wellingborough, Northampton. It is a member of the Federation of Schools’ Lodges, a sister organisation of our own PSLC.
The Family Tree can be seen here and links to lodges in our family tree can be found on the links page.
The origins of the Old Malvernian Lodge
The idea for a Lodge for Old Malvernians was conceived in 1921 by several members of the College Council among whom were the Right Hon. Sir Paul Lawrence QC, who was the first OM Chairman of Council and was contemporaneously President of the Malvernian Society. Norman Morice, who was only the third OM to serve on the Council, became the first Master of the Lodge.
Other Founders from the College Council were Joseph Shaw KC who, as the senior OM (SH 1868-75) was the de facto Father of the Lodge and its first Treasurer and Geoffrey B Williams. Among the other Founders were the Very Rev’d Harold Costley-White, who was Headmaster of Westminster School and later Chaplain to the King, HK Foster one of the famous brothers, Reginald Kennedy-Cox who went on to run the Malvern College Docklands Mission to great acclaim and Lt Col FH Fernie DSO who was the first Secretary.
They were joined in March 1922 by Sir Herbert Morgan KBE and Sir Artur Whinney KBE, the Chairman of the Appointments Board, who, while not OMs, were eligible for membership by virtue of their association through the Council. The Lodge’s petition to the Grand Lodge was sponsored by the Grand Stewards Lodge which stands at the head of the Roll of Lodges without number, an almost unique honour and one that has been repeated only once since.
The Lodge has had many eminent Old Malvernians among its membership over the first hundred years and, while not wishing to single out anyone in particular, the name of GC Levick (No.8 1910-14) will be familiar to today’s Malvernians as the benefactor of the Sports Scholarships which bear his name.
History
The Old Malvernian Lodge was warranted in 1921 and consecrated on 26 January that year. There were thirty-five Founders.
The Lodge hosted its first Public Schools’ Lodges Council Festival in 1934 at Malvern College, the 18th such festival. We have gone on to host it on two further occasions in 1972 and 2005.
Meeting originally at the Imperial on Regent Street, and subsequently at several locations in the West End, we meet today at Mark Masons’ Hall on St James’ Street.
A short history of the Lodge’s first 75 years has been compiled by W Bro Havard and is available at the Library & Museum of Freemasonry in London.
Meeting Dates
Members of the Lodge meet in London three times each year:
2nd Tuesday in January
4th Tuesday in April
